A Concert of Early Music, “Music and Poetry in the Art of Song”, to Take Place at Bauska Castle

On Saturday, 22 January 2022, at 12:00, a concert of early music, “Music and Poetry in the Art of Song”, or “Music and Poetry in the Art of Song”, will take place at the Bauska Castle Museum. The performers will be students of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, Nora Kalniņa (LV), and Italian theorbist Mauro Pinciaroli.

At the concert “Music and Poetry in the Art of Song”, listeners are invited to enjoy works by prominent composers of the 14th–17th centuries, including Guillaume de Machaut (c. 1300–1377), John Dowland (1563–1626), Francesca Caccini (1587–1641), Tarquinio Merula (1595–1665), Stefano Landi (1587–1639), Claudio Monteverdi (1567–1643), Barbara Strozzi (1619–1677), Girolamo and others.

Artists: Karolina Parmas (soprano, Lithuania), Fausta Balčaitytė (soprano, Lithuania), Simona Jocevičiūtė (soprano, Lithuania), Ūla Zemeckytė (soprano, Lithuania), Nora Kalniņa (soprano, Latvia), Arūnas Maliukas (bass-baritone, Lithuania), Eglė Rudokaitė (organ, Lithuania), Jēkabs Bernāts (tenor, Latvia), Mauro Pinciaroli (lute, Italy).

Since 2020, the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre has offered a master’s specialisation in “Baroque Opera”, providing young and talented singers with the opportunity to learn to interpret the music of past centuries from the perspective of historically informed performance practice. During the event, a medical face mask or FFP2 respirator must be worn (not applicable to children under the age of 7), and the epidemiological regulations in force in the country to limit the spread of COVID-19 must be observed.

The concert will take place as part of the project “Historic Route: Raudondvaris – Bauska”. The main aim of the project is to increase the number of visitors to the Bauska Castle Museum and Raudondvaris Manor (Lithuania) during the off-season and winter months. The project is organised by the Riga Historical Theatre and Music Society and the Bauska Castle Museum in cooperation with Raudondvaris Manor.

As part of the project, five residencies for different early-music performers, from Latvia and abroad, are planned. During these residencies, concert programmes will be prepared and presented both at Bauska Castle and at Raudondvaris Manor from November 2021 to March 2022. This concert will also take place in Lithuania, at Raudondvaris Manor, on Sunday, 23 January 2022, at 16:00.

The concert is planned to be prepared as part of a creative residency for artists at the Bauska Castle Museum, focusing on rhetoric, the use of ornaments appropriate to the style and period, stage gestures, and dance.

The total project funding for Raudondvaris Manor and the Bauska Castle Museum is EUR 785,875.00, including ERDF funding of 85%, or EUR 667,993.75.

Project funding for Bauska Municipality: EUR 384,500.00, including ERDF funding of EUR 326,825, national budget co-financing of EUR 19,225, and municipal co-financing of EUR 38,450. The project duration is 24 months (01.01.2021–31.12.2022).
