“Bird Kaleidoscope”

From 2 March to 30 April 2026, the photography exhibition “Bird Kaleidoscope” by Ērika and Alvils Baltiņš, members of the “Stāstnīca” association and the Latgale Photographers’ Association, will be held at the Kārsava Cultural History Centre “Līču mājas”. 

Together with the artists, we will open the exhibition on 3 March at 16:00.

The exhibition presents photographs of birds commonly found around homes in Latvia, revealing both everyday encounters and less frequently noticed moments in nature. In their photographs, the artists highlight birds in motion—in flight, while hunting and caring for their young—while also revealing bird life in close-up, allowing viewers to see subtle details and discover the world of birds from a new perspective.

For Ērika and Alvils Baltiņš, bird photography is only one of the fields in which these amateur photographers work. From their very first steps in photography, photographing birds and animals has gone hand in hand with landscape photography, which the photographers consider their primary focus. The playful flight of birds past the window and around the bird feeder was also what inspired them to pick up a camera and begin capturing moments—an interest that gradually grew into a passion with consequences of its own. One must learn to identify birds by their appearance and calls, understand their behaviour and search for nesting sites. These are just some of the aspects encountered when one begins photographing birds and animals. This exhibition brings together bird photographs taken over a period of five years.

The exhibition “Bird Kaleidoscope” brings viewers closer to the lives of birds—their flight, songs and secrets—revealing a world where every wing, beak and song tells its own unique story. 

The exhibition invites viewers to look, notice, understand and take part—to surrender to a bird kaleidoscope in which different perspectives and rhythms of life merge into a unified, living whole.
