Gulbene Secondary School’s “Spieķis 1” Team Wins the CSDD Young Cyclists’ Competition in Gulbene

Yesterday, 27 May, the final competition stage of the first round of the CSDD “Young Road Users’ Forum” took place in Gulbene. The Gulbene Secondary School team “Spieķis 1” took first place: Intars Ilgsalietis, Arnis Reihlers, Renārs Vagulis, Kristiāna Beķere,  Adriāna Radiončika, Viktorija Tomasa, and teacher Inga Anča.

The CSDD young cyclists’ competition “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” nationwide marathon has come to an end. Fifteen teams from the city and municipality of Gulbene took part in the thirty-second and final stage of the first round in Gulbene. During the competition, the students demonstrated their theoretical knowledge of road traffic regulations, first aid, and bicycle construction; they also had to complete rides on two courses.

With a total of 636 points, first place went to Gulbene Secondary School’s “Spieķis 1” team.  This team is the last to qualify for the second round, which will take place just one week later, on 5–6 June, at the “Ronīši” recreation and sports centre.  The winning team of the Latvian final will earn the right to represent Latvia at the European Young Road Users’ Competition in Vienna, Austria, from 3–6 September. Uvis Pavārs won the individual competition in Gulbene.

6th place: “Velo sešinieks” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 501 point;

7th place: “Jaunie velosipēdisti” team from K. Valdemārs Primary School; 493 points;

8th place: “Spieķis 2” team from Gulbene Secondary School; 470 points;

9th place: “MBA” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 467 points;

10th place: “Lielie braucēji” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 458 points;

11th place: “Daukstes” team from Dauksti Primary School; 401 point;

12th place: “Kukaramba” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 388 points;

13th place: “Ātrumnieki” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 355 points;

14th place: “Ņiprie velosipēdisti” team from K. Valdemārs Primary School; 344 points;

15th place: “Trakais pagrieziens” team from Gulbene Birch Primary School; 222 points.

For 22 years, CSDD has organised the “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition throughout Latvia to raise young road users’ interest in traffic safety and promote safety on the roads. As usual, the competition takes place in three rounds, with the first round being held in various regions of Latvia from 10 April through 27 May. The second round of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015”—the Latvian final—is scheduled for 5–6 June and will be attended by the teams that received the highest scores in the first-round competitions in their respective regions. The third round, namely the European Young Road Users’ Competition, will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3–6 September and will be attended by the winning team of the Latvian final.

To take part in the competition, students must have been born in 2003–2005, form a team of six people—three girls and three boys—come up with a team name, and complete the electronic application form on the website http://www.berniem.csdd.lv/index.php/satiksmes-drosiba/reg/konkursi. Participation in the competition must be coordinated with a teacher or another adult, and the team must bring a signed school confirmation of the participation of the specific team and students in the Young Road Users’ Forum. Each team is accompanied to the competition by one or two adults—teachers or parents.

The Young Road Users’ Forum is organised by CSDD. In developing the competition content, CSDD cooperates with the National Centre for Education, which has been CSDD’s educational-project partner for many years. The competition is implemented by the association “Par stipru Latviju”; it is financed from OCTA funds, while the Latvian Automobile and Motorcycling Association and the Emergency Medical Service provide support.
