Assessing the achievements of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and embarking on a new phase marked by the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development, the UNESCO Latvian National Commission, in cooperation with Daugavpils University and the National Centre for Education, is organising the international conference “Education and Science for Sustainable Development”. It is being held on 2 and 3 December at Daugavpils University, Daugavpils University public relations manager Zane Ločmele reported.
The conference “Education and Science for Sustainable Development” is attended by education experts, researchers and students, as well as representatives of non-governmental organisations and teachers from Latvia and other countries. They discuss the challenges of education for sustainable development and strengthen and establish new partnerships among universities, researchers, schools, non-governmental organisations and communities.
The lectures and discussions in the various working sessions focus on examples and methods of integrating education for sustainable development both into learning and everyday activities.
Conference participants are invited to assess different pedagogical approaches and share ideas and examples of good practice for further use both in work with pupils and in teacher training and professional development. The experience of various institutions that seek to introduce the principles of sustainable development into all aspects of their activities, including building maintenance, decision-making, and so on, is also discussed, as are various community initiatives and programmes that support environmentally friendly entrepreneurship.
Arjen Wals, head of the UNESCO Chair in Social Learning and Sustainable Development and a professor at Wageningen University (the Netherlands) and the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), will also deliver a lecture at the conference.
The conference in Daugavpils is taking place at a time when the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) is being held in Paris and world leaders are making crucial decisions on mitigating climate change. Daugavpils University and the Baltic and Black Sea Region Education Research Consortium (BBCC) have signed an open letter to the participants of the UN Climate Change Conference—COP21.
