Digital Technologies—Already in Preschool

With the support of the Jūrmala City Municipality, preschools have supplemented their teaching materials with new digital technologies, which are an excellent aid in mastering the learning process.

The learning process has become more diverse and interesting.

I. Vasmanis, Head of the Education Department, informed us that the Jūrmala City Municipality had additionally provided 52 robotics and algorithmics kits to five preschools. They were received by the preschools “Katrīna”, “Zvaniņš”, “Austras koks”, “Saulīte”, and the group for five- to six-year-old children at Jūrmala Mežmala Secondary School’s preschool. The educational institutions have been using them for instruction since January 2021.

L. Vārpiņa, a methodologist at the “Lācītis” preschool, explained that an interactive screen had already been purchased for the “Lācītis” preschool in the autumn, and another one at the beginning of this year. The groups of five- and six-year-old children are now equipped with the latest technologies. “Teachers have access to the digital teaching materials on the soma.lv website, which makes it possible to adapt and diversify the learning content more effectively, so that its content and level are appropriate for each child. In their teaching, teachers also use laptops, audio and video players, as well as light tables,” said L. Vārpiņa.

The “Photon” robot is also used for learning at the “Lācītis” preschool. It is a modern tool through which children explore the world of modern technologies through their own experiences and experiments, develop creative and logical thinking, and acquire their first programming skills.

It should always be remembered that digital technologies help children learn; they do not replace practical activities outdoors and in learning-area centres, or communication and cooperation with one another!
