To improve access to preschool education services in Riga, on Tuesday, 20 April, the Riga City Council’s City Property Committee supported the proposed amendments to the municipality’s Investment Plan, adding the reconstruction of two municipally owned buildings at 21 Rūpniecības Street and 19 Slāvu Street to establish new kindergartens. It is planned that, following reconstruction, the two buildings will provide nearly 300 places for young kindergarten attendees.
The amendments provide for five preschool groups to be established in the building at 21 Rūpniecības Street, providing places for 100 pupils. Meanwhile, 11 new preschool groups are planned to be established in the building at 19 Slāvu Street, providing places for 198 children. The reconstruction projects are planned to begin this year and be completed within seven months.
The total cost of the projects is estimated at EUR 4,768,000. They will be implemented using municipal funds and a state budget loan, which the municipality is entitled to receive in accordance with the new Cabinet of Ministers regulations, “Procedure for Evaluating Municipal Investment Projects for the Construction of New Preschool Education Institutions or the Expansion of Existing Preschool Education Institutions.”
The proposal prepared by the Riga City Council’s Property Department must still be approved at a council meeting.
