Educational hike “From Cēsis to Lake Ninieris – What Is Nature Worth?”

Both in the city and behind the scenes beyond it, nature constantly takes care of us and our well-being. At 18:00 on 16 August, everyone is invited to place this care at the centre of attention by joining an evening hike exploring the value of nature, “From Cēsis to Lake Ninieris – What Is Nature Worth?”. The starting and finishing point of the 6-kilometre hike will be at the main entrance to Cēsis City Stadium, at 6 Valmieras Street. It will also be possible to join the hike after 18:00.

The hike will be led by environmental experts from the association “Baltijas Krasti” and the foundation “Eko forums”, who will share their knowledge during the event and speak about the diversity and richness of the habitats of Cēsis, meadows, forests, marshes and Lake Ninieris, emphasising the importance of the services provided by these ecosystems:

“Natural ecosystems provide countless services that ensure human existence and make human civilisation possible.  We may not currently pay directly for these ecosystem services, but we pay considerably for their loss (for example, for the construction and operation of wastewater treatment facilities, the spread of diseases, the loss of soil fertility, and so on). The everyday decisions made by both society and territorial development planners directly affect the extent and quality of these services.”

During the walk, participants will be invited to take part in small activities that will deepen our understanding of the services provided by Cēsis’s natural environment and how, through our large and small everyday choices, we can support nature’s care for us.

Participants are advised to bring drinking water, dress appropriately for the weather and wear water-resistant footwear. Have you always been interested in a question related to Latvia’s environment but have not yet had the opportunity to find out the answer? Bring those questions along too; the hike leaders will try to answer them.

The hike is organised as part of project No. 1-08/87/2022 “What Is Nature Worth?”. The project is funded by the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund under the guidelines of the project “Responsible Lifestyle”, within the activity “Implementation of educational events on an environmentally friendly lifestyle”.
