Electric Cars in Latvia. How Far Away Is the Future in 12 Years?
As is well known, since joining the European Union, Latvians have enjoyed many of its benefits, including support funds for small and medium-sized enterprises, project financing, campaigns for the development of municipal infrastructure, and many others. Most of the work on behalf of the European Union is carried out by our 100 bright minds in parliament, but we citizens also acquire additional responsibilities, not just advantages. Quite recently, in June of last year, 339 Members of the European Parliament voted in favour of achieving zero-emission travel on European roads by 2035.
The Zero-Emission Plan. What Does It Mean for the Average Latvian?
Electric cars in Latvia are becoming an increasingly common sight not only on the streets of Riga but also in other regions. If the European Parliament did not consider the zero-emission plan achievable, this would have been reflected in the vote. But the vote has now taken place, and the results are clear—let us reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions! What does this mean for drivers without delving into the jungle of legislation? Should we throw away the keys to our diesel cars?
Take it easy—there is no need to panic.
We can put our car keys back in our pockets. The zero-emission plan does not mean that on 1 January 2035 everyone driving a fuel-powered car will be arrested. However, it is worth remembering that not everything that is “imposed” is necessarily bad. Electric new cars in Latvia are becoming increasingly popular not only because 339 Members of Parliament are wagging their fingers about climate change. Electric cars are easy on the wallet, offer excellent comfort, and their charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly developed. It might be useful for every driver to find out how an electric car could make their own life more convenient and travelling more affordable!
