Laser and light-based procedures are contraindicated in summer

Photorejuvenation, laser correction of pigmentation, laser correction and coagulation of dilated blood vessels—all of these procedures should not be performed during the summer.

First, these procedures use an IPL system (a light-based system) or laser systems. Second, the active factor of this equipment is light, which transfers its energy to “targets”—haemoglobin, oxyhaemoglobin, melanin or water. During the summer months, however, we develop a tan, which means that an additional target is formed. Moreover, the melanin in a tan is located in the upper layers of the skin, compared with the primary targets. The light system and/or laser emits light that passes through all the layers of the skin and transfers its energy to the first target in its path—the tan. As a result, we risk causing a serious burn on the skin’s surface, while there will no longer be enough energy to work on the deeper targets (dilated blood vessels and unwanted pigmentation). The risk of side effects also increases. Even in the case of ideally fair, untanned skin, we stimulate the rejuvenation processes, but exposure to ultraviolet radiation provokes the appearance of pigmentation.

Do you need that? I think not. Wait until autumn and make an appointment with a good specialist.

Laser resurfacing and chemical peels are also contraindicated during the summer

Laser resurfacing is a very aggressive procedure. Essentially, we damage the skin’s surface by making “holes” in it. Such an aggressive procedure can cause pigmentation during the rehabilitation period. The pigmentation will be persistent, long-lasting and very difficult for both you and the specialist to deal with.

The situation is similar with chemical peels. We damage the skin’s surface in order to trigger controlled inflammation. However, it must be remembered that any inflammation, even an insignificant one, under the influence of ultraviolet radiation—which is highly characteristic of the summer months—will lead to unwanted pigmentation.

In conclusion, I would like to say that residents of Latvia rarely see the sun, and it will be difficult for them to live with such restrictions on sun exposure. That is precisely why these procedures are not performed at our clinic during the summer.

“Wait until autumn and undergo all these procedures, but without any harm to your health,” Ludmila concludes.
