Ukrainian folk-electro band Go_A joins the extensive lineup of artists at the Summer Sound festival. Its music weaves the so-called “white voice”—the authentic folk singing technique of the band’s lead vocalist Katerina Pavlenko—through electronic rhythms, complemented by her powerful vocals. "We want visitors to the Summer Sound festival to feel our love, strength, passion and the unique culture of Ukraine during our performance. We wish the people of Latvia peace, harmony and security," Katerina said, commenting on the band’s performance in Latvia.
Go_A interprets Ukrainian folklore by dressing it in electronic music sounds. Its name derives from the word "Go"—movement—while "A" comes from the Ancient Greek "alpha", symbolising a return to cultural roots. Its story began in 2012, when sound producer Taras Shevchenko met ethno singer Katerina Pavlenko. After recording several songs, they realised that Ukrainian folklore and electronic music complemented each other perfectly, combining their energy and emotions into a truly enjoyable sonic experience.
Go_A currently consists of ethno singer and lead vocalist Katerina Pavlenko and the musicians: Taras Shevchenko, who plays keyboards and percussion and is also Go_A’s sound producer, combining a wide variety of musical styles and sounds; Ihor Didenchuk, a folklorist and unique multi-instrumentalist; and Ivan Hruhoriak, a guitar virtuoso since the age of 12.
Go_A gained widespread international recognition with the hit “SHUM”, performing it at the “Eurovision Song Contest 2021”. Despite being performed in Ukrainian, the song won listeners’ hearts and became a worldwide hit, reaching the top of numerous European music charts, placing second on Spotify Viral USA and first on Spotify Viral Worldwide, among others. “SHUM” is also the first Ukrainian song to enter the Billboard TOP 200 chart.
The festival has already announced a lineup of Latvian artists including Musiqq, Gacho, Jumprava, Dagamba, Astro’n’out, Singapūras Satīns, Kreisais Krasts, Pienvedēja Piedzīvojumi, Ralfs Eilands and others. The artist lineup will soon be expanded with several international and Latvian musicians and bands. In 2019, “Summer Sound” attracted a record number of visitors—32,000 people attended the festival over the two days.
The tenth “Summer Sound” festival will take place in Liepāja at the end of July—on 29 and 30 July.
