For the first time in Latvia, the internationally sought-after conductor Gregory Buchalter from the United States will conduct the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music’s selected symphony orchestra.
The concert programme promises to be musically elegant, diverse in genre and captivating. It will feature the finest music for the stage, including, for example, Rusalka’s aria from Antonín Dvořák’s opera “Rusalka”, Nemorino’s aria from Gaetano Donizetti’s opera “The Elixir of Love”, and Tosca’s aria from Giacomo Puccini’s opera of the same name. Opera and operetta music will harmoniously coexist with Broadway musicals, demonstrating that the various genres of musical theatre are different branches of one great musical tree, each with its own place, and that outstanding art is founded on talent, a professional approach and high standards. Soprano Liene Kinča, an internationally highly acclaimed Latvian opera diva, has been performing roles for many years at the world’s most prominent opera houses and rarely appears in her native Latvia. Liene’s upcoming and current engagements include the roles of Ada in DIE FEEN and Elisabeth in TANNHÄUSER at Leipzig Opera, her debut as Isolde in the opera Tristan und Isolde in Estonia, and, following this concert, a return to the world of music in Geneva.
All the young aspirants—the rising stars of opera—who have been given the opportunity to participate in this Gala Concert have undergone a rigorous professional selection process and have been recognised as the finest performers capable of vividly representing the future creative potential of Latvia’s vocal stage.
G. Buchalter’s creative work is currently based at Florida Grand Opera. He is a guest conductor of the South Florida Symphony Orchestra and the music director of the Varna International Festival and the Grand Strand Music Festival, a conductor at Orlando Opera and Teatro Lirico d’Europa, as well as a longtime guest conductor at the Metropolitan Opera and artistic director of Camerata of the Washington Opera. He also performs regularly in many other parts of the world.
With this concert programme, the Operetta Theatre is presenting a new, artistically outstanding and ambitious event comprising Gregory Buchalter’s master classes at the Academy of Music and the Gala Concert, highlighting the professional achievements of vocal stage arts students.
