Strongman Ivars Grahoļskis won the sixth stage of the international Strongman Open
Challenge tournament held on 22 August near the city of Myrhorod, Ukraine.
In addition to Grahoļskis, seven athletes from Ukraine and one from Belarus—
Yevgeny Shavchenko—participated in the competition. Shortly before the start of the event, a very large number of people had already arrived, as it
was a long-awaited event in the small Ukrainian village near Myrhorod—all the spectator
seats were occupied, and people surrounded the arena from all sides.
The chief referee’s whistle sounded, and the tournament began with a relay in which the competitors had to carry a 300-kilogram
weight over a distance of 15 metres and then roll a tyre (350 kg) five times. The
best result was achieved by Denys Dubrovskiy (Kyiv, Ukraine)—31.72 seconds—
while Grahoļskis finished only fifth, with a time of 42.45 seconds. In the second discipline, lifting a 120-kilogram log
for repetitions in one minute, the Latvian won. Grahoļskis lifted it seven
times in 60 seconds, while the youngest competitor, 21-year-old Yevgeny Shavchenko from Vitebsk
(Belarus), did it six times, finishing second. Grahoļskis then triumphed in the
farmer’s walk as well, carrying the suitcases for 30 metres (each weighing 130 kg) in just 21.68 seconds. By lifting
the 80-kilogram dumbbell seven times in one minute, the Latvian strongman secured his third consecutive victory
in the competition. Grahoļskis also received an exclusive prize—a royal dumbbell, awarded at each
tournament to the strongest athlete in this discipline. In the final event, pulling an 8-tonne
vehicle, Ivars Grahoļskis finished second (15.03 sec), losing only to
Ukrainian athlete Denys Dubrovskiy (14.53 sec).
In the tournament’s overall standings, after five events held under the hot sun, strongman Ivars Grahoļskis won
with 34 points and three victories. Denys
Dubrovskiy of Ukraine finished second. This athlete earned the same number of points, but this time a result
that was a few hundredths of a second slower in the vehicle-pulling event prevented him from winning. The third step
of the podium was taken by Valeriy Gazayev (Ukraine), who scored 29 points.
