“Impressions of Africa”

The exhibition “Impressions of Africa” by Ilze Cērpiņa and Uģis Grantiņš is on view at Slampe Culture Palace until 27 February.

The dance hall at Slampe Culture Palace will host an exhibition of paintings by Ilze Cērpiņa and photographs by Uģis Grantiņš inspired by the atmosphere of Africa.

A special turning point in Ilze Cērpiņa’s artistic vision was a journey to Africa in autumn 2023. This continent, with its boundless expanses, contrasts in nature and the energy of its people, left a deep impression on her heart. The African sun, saturated hues and powerful forms of nature, the ocean coast of Zanzibar and the people of Tanzania also found their way into Ilze’s paintings.

Uģis Grantiņš’s photographs capture fishermen on the coasts of Tanzania and Zanzibar at work in their daily lives—in traditional boats and under the harsh sun of the Indian Ocean. The images reveal both their strength and skill and the local community’s close connection with nature and the sea. Nets, sand, the salty sea wind, and hard yet proud work.
