The Annual New Year’s Project “Secret Santa” Has Started

For the fifth year running, the kindest New Year’s social project, “Secret Santa” (the Mysterious Santa), which originated in Latvia, is bringing together more than 20,000 participants from 65 countries around the world. “Secret Santa” is a non-profit event in which strangers from all over the world exchange Christmas and New Year’s gifts. To participate, you need to complete a simple registration at http://www.mysecretsanta.me  by providing your postal address so that you can receive a gift. A computer program mixes up all the addresses and assigns each participant one random address to which they must send a gift.

The project’s founder is a resident of Riga, and thus Riga has become the international capital of anonymous Santa Clauses.

 

“Five years ago, I suggested that my friends simply exchange gifts, while my friends invited their friends, and their friends in turn invited their friends—and so, just like a snowball rolling downhill, a remarkably large number of people joined in, which, to be honest, I had not expected! – says the project’s founder and organiser, Jurijs Bojčuks. – Today, we are creating an opportunity for tens of thousands of people to share their warmth, kindness and joy with someone on the other side of the world! I am very pleased that our project has become popular and is already becoming a symbol of Riga beyond the country’s borders, alongside “Laima” sweets, “Riga Black Balsam”, “Dinamo Riga” and Kristaps Porziņģis.” 

The organisers on the project’s further development: in the future, the project will no longer focus solely on New Year’s celebrations, but also on other international holidays. A special website will also be created where anyone who wishes, from anywhere in the world, will be able to offer items they have created for sale and purchase them as gifts for participants. A portion of the income is planned to be allocated to charity—to meet the needs of socially vulnerable people, including people with disabilities, children in orphanages, residents of nursing homes, and others.
