At the request of the Riga City Council City Development Department, AS „Ceļuprojekts” has developed the technical design/construction design for Section 1 of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor במסגרת the European transport network development project “Integrating the City of Riga and the Port of Riga into the TEN-T Network: Development of the Technical Design for Section 1 of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor”. Thus, the design work for the construction project of Section 1 of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor has been completed.
Section 1 of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor will form the eastern part of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor. It will begin at national road A2 (Riga–Sigulda), near Berģi in the territory of Garkalne Municipality, and continue to Gustavs Zemgals Avenue (Eastern Motorway).
The completed Riga Northern Transport Corridor and its complex of transport structures will functionally complement the existing urban environment, becoming a multifunctional road section that will simultaneously meet the needs of local and transit traffic and be convenient for use by the city’s public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.
According to the Riga and Riga Metropolitan Area Mobility Plan developed at the end of 2010, the Riga Northern Transport Corridor plays an important role in improving mobility in Riga and the Riga metropolitan area; this is also confirmed by the calculations carried out as part of the implementation of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor construction project. If the Riga Northern Transport Corridor is not built, traffic intensity on the bridges in central Riga during the morning peak hour in 2031 will be 34% higher, while average travel speeds throughout Riga will decrease by 12%.
The objective of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor project is to establish a safe, environmentally friendly and convenient network of arterial roads in Riga and the Riga metropolitan area. By integrating the project into the European road network (TEN-T), the development needs of the Freeport of Riga will be met, central Riga will be relieved of transport-related traffic, the overall environmental quality in the city of Riga will be improved, and the capacity of Latvia’s east–west transport corridor will be increased, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of the country, region and city at regional and international level. In addition, road safety will be improved and more convenient access to specific areas and facilities will be provided. The Northern Corridor route will carry the main transit flows, diverting them away from central Riga and residential and culturally historic areas.
