“Young Road Users’ Forum” in Krāslava

Krāslava Primary School’s “Čillī” team wins the young cyclists’ competition in Krāslava

On Tuesday, 28 April, the twelfth of 32 first-round stages of the Road Traffic Safety Directorate’s (CSDD) “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition took place in Krāslava.  Competing against six teams, Krāslava Primary School’s team, named “Čillī”, won a convincing victory. The team consisted of Edvīns Geks, Kristiāns Fadejevs, Aivis Plociņš, Samanta Krumpāne, Sintija-Patrīcija Gendele, Karīna Parazenko and teacher Inta Japiņa.

Six teams from Krāslava and Dagda municipalities took part in the twelfth young cyclists’ competition, the first-round competition of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015”, in Krāslava. Two teams represented Indra Secondary School, while one team each represented Krāslava Primary School, Andzeļi Primary School, Krāslava Rainbow Secondary School and Robežnieki Primary School. In the overall standings, the “Čillī” team from Krāslava Primary School scored 534 points and took first place, automatically qualifying for the second round and becoming eligible for the main prize. In the individual competition, Igors Parazenko proved the strongest.

Overall results:

1st place: “ Čillī” team from Krāslava Primary School; 534 points;

2nd place: “Ritenis” team from Indra Secondary School; 435 points;

3rd place: “Eži” team from Andzeļi Primary School; 395 points;

4th place: “Varavīksne” team from Krāslava Rainbow Secondary School; 393 points;

5th place: “Luksofors” team from Indra Secondary School; 377 points;

6th place: “Young Cyclists” team from Robežnieki Primary School; 167 points.

In the competition, the young cyclists had to demonstrate theoretical knowledge of the road traffic regulations, be able to provide first aid, know the structure of a bicycle and complete a practical riding course.

The CSDD has been organising the “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition throughout Latvia for 22 years, in order to raise young road users’ interest in traffic safety and promote safety on the roads. As usual, the competition takes place in three rounds; the first-round competitions are held in various regions of Latvia from 10 April to 27 May. The upcoming competitions are scheduled as follows:

• Wednesday, 29 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the Preiļi Municipality Children’s and Youth Sports School; schools from the Aglona, Riebiņi, Līvāni, Preiļi and Vārkava municipalities will participate;

• Thursday, 30 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the CSDD Madona branch; school teams from the Cesvaine, Lubāna, Ērgļi, Madona and Varakļāni municipalities may participate;

• Tuesday, 5 May, at 11:00 a.m., at Liepāja A. Pushkin Secondary School No. 2; school teams from the Grobiņa, Rucava, Nīca, Priekule, Vaiņode, Durbe, Pāvilosta and Aizpute municipalities are invited to participate;

• Wednesday, 6 May, at 11:00 a.m., on the premises of the CSDD Ventspils branch; school teams from the city and municipality of Ventspils will participate.

The second round of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” — the Latvian final — is scheduled for 5–6 June and will involve the teams that received the highest scores in the first-round competitions in their respective regions. The third round, or the European Young Road Users’ Competition, will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3–6 September, with the winning team of the Latvian final participating.

To participate in the competition, students must have been born in 2003–2005, form a team of six people — three girls and three boys — come up with a team name and complete the electronic application form on the website http://www.berniem.csdd.lv/index.php/satiksmes-drosiba/reg/konkursi. The team’s participation in the competition must be coordinated with a teacher or another adult, and a signed school confirmation of the participation of the particular team and students in the Young Road Users’ Forum must be brought to the competition. Each team is accompanied to the competition by one or two adults — teachers or parents.

The Young Road Users’ Forum is organised by the CSDD. In developing the competition content, the CSDD cooperates with the National Centre for Education, which has been a partner in the CSDD’s educational projects for several years. The competition is implemented by the association “For a Strong Latvia”; it is financed from OCTA funds, with support from the Latvian Automobile Association and the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD).
