“Young Road Users’ Forum” Competition for Young Cyclists in Daugavpils

The strongest team at the young cyclists’ competition in Daugavpils is “Ilūkstieši”

On Saturday, 25 April, the tenth and eleventh of the 32 first-round competition stages of the CSDD “Young Road Users’ Forum” took place in Daugavpils.  The team from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1, called “Ilūkstieši”, took the top step of the podium. Its members were Lonija Kaķeševa, Nikola Lapa, Vita Ivanova, Māris Pimenovs, Einārs Juhna, Emīls Linargs and teacher Viktors Jasiņavičs.

Four teams took part in the first-round “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” competition for young cyclists held in Daugavpils: two from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1, and one each from Zemgale Secondary School and Saliena Secondary School. First place and the right to compete in the Latvian final were won by the “Ilūkstieši” team from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1, with a total of 608 points.

Overall results:

1st place: “Ilūkstieši” from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1; 608 points;

2nd place: “Bumbulīši no Ilūkstes” from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1; 471 points;

3rd place: “Jautrie velosipēdisti” from Zemgale Secondary School; 410 points;

4th place: “Draugi” from Saliena Secondary School; 130 points.

At the competition, the young cyclists had to demonstrate theoretical knowledge of the traffic regulations, be able to provide first aid, know the structure of a bicycle and complete a practical cycling course.

CSDD has been organising the “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition throughout Latvia for 22 years, in order to interest young road users in road safety and promote safety on the roads. As usual, the competition takes place in three rounds; the first-round events are held in various regions of Latvia from 10 April until 27 May. The next competitions are scheduled as follows:

• Tuesday, 28 April, at 11:00 a.m., at Krāslava Varavīksne Primary School; school teams from Krāslava and Dagda municipalities are invited to participate;

• Wednesday, 29 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the Preiļi Municipality Children’s and Youth Sports School; schools from Aglona, Riebiņi, Līvāni, Preiļi and Vārkava municipalities will participate;

• Thursday, 30 April, at 11:00 a.m., at the CSDD Madona branch; school teams from Cesvaine, Lubāna, Ērgļi, Madona and Varakļāni municipalities may participate;

• Tuesday, 5 May, at 11:00 a.m., at Liepāja A. Pushkin Secondary School No. 2; school teams from Grobiņa, Rucava, Nīca, Priekule, Vaiņode, Durbe, Pāvilosta and Aizpute municipalities are invited to participate;

• Wednesday, 6 May, at 11:00 a.m., on the premises of the CSDD Ventspils branch; school teams from the city and municipality of Ventspils will participate.

The second round of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” – the Latvian final – is scheduled for 5–6 June. It will be attended by the teams that achieve the highest scores in the first-round competitions in their respective regions. The third round, or the European Young Road Users’ Competition, will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3–6 September, with the winning team from the Latvian final participating.

To take part in the competition, students must have been born in 2003–2005, form a team of six people—three girls and three boys—choose a team name and complete the electronic application form on the website http://www.berniem.csdd.lv/index.php/satiksmes-drosiba/reg/konkursi . Participation in the competition must be agreed with a teacher or another adult, and the team must bring a signed confirmation from the school regarding the participation of the particular team and students in the Young Road Users’ Forum. Each team is accompanied to the competition by one or two adults—teachers or parents.

The Young Road Users’ Forum is organised by CSDD. In developing the content of the competition, CSDD cooperates with the National Centre for Education, which has been CSDD’s educational-project partner for many years. The competition is implemented by the association “Par stipru Latviju”; it is financed from OCTA funds, while support is provided by the Latvian Automobile and Motorcycling Association and the Emergency Medical Service (NMPD).
