On Friday, 10 June, a meeting of the Council for the Judiciary took place, at which members
of the Council for the Judiciary heard Jautrīte Briede, the candidate nominated by members
of the Saeima for the position of Constitutional Court judge. The Council for the Judiciary recognises
Jautrīte Briede as suitable for this position.
J. Briede has obtained a doctoral degree in legal science from the Faculty of Law of the University of
Latvia. She is currently a senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court and
a professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.
J. Briede is the author and co-author of commentaries on the Constitution and the Administrative
Procedure Law, as well as numerous scholarly publications, and has participated as an expert in various
international projects. J. Briede is also a member of the Latvian Association of Administrative Judges and
the transparency organisation “Delna”. She has been awarded the Order of the Three Stars and the Second
Class Honour Badge of the Justice System.
At the meeting, the Court Administration also informed the members of the Council for the Judiciary about its
work results in 2021. Māris Rēķis, Acting Director of the Court Administration, noted that one of the most
important tasks of the Court Administration in the previous year was ensuring the operation of courts under
the conditions of the state of emergency, as well as installing technical equipment in courtrooms. In 2021,
an additional 500 computers, 32 videoconferencing systems and 48 document cameras were installed in
courtrooms.
Work was also undertaken to improve the range of court services through the Court
Administration’s campaign “Convenience Is Valuable”. The campaign explained the availability of court
services remotely.
Under the conditions of the state of emergency, the Court Administration ensured the commencement of
operations of the Economic Affairs Court, including the selection of court staff, the provision of training for
new judges and employees, and the fitting-out of the new court premises.
In 2021, as part of a European Social Fund project, the Court Administration organised
training sessions, experience-exchange events and conferences, which were attended by a total of 4528
justice-sector employees.
In his report, M. Rēķis also presented this year’s major challenges, related to the commencement of work
on two Recovery Fund projects—the establishment of the Justice Academy and the continuation of the
implementation of the e-case system—as well as the establishment of a single Riga City District Court.
