After the first day of school, students are invited to go to Pasta Island at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate the start of the new school year together at the “ZinīBUMS” event. Until 7:00 p.m., everyone will be able to take part in various educational and creative activities, and afterward continue the celebrations together with the bands “Transleiteris” and “Augša”. At 4:00 p.m., a large-scale mural created by artist Dainis Rudens will be unveiled near the Mītava Bridge at 7 Jāņa Čakstes Boulevard as part of the first graffiti art festival “Signs of Strength for Latvia”.

The workshops will be divided into eight school-subject blocks – Music, Free Period, History, Health, Home Economics, Sports, Break and Art – with a different task awaiting curious students in each: solving crossword puzzles, drawing, assembling various jigsaw puzzles, playing a game with questions about road-traffic safety rules, and more.

Students will have the opportunity to make musical instruments themselves and take part in an improvisational theatre game, as well as view the equipment of police service vehicles. The youngest visitors will be provided with outlines of the tower of Jelgava’s Holy Trinity Church, which each child will be able to colour in and take home. Children can also look forward to physical activities, such as an obstacle course incorporating elements of various sports – basketball, athletics, acrobatics, football and others.

For each completed task, participants will receive a stamp. Once they have collected them all, they will be able to exchange them for a souvenir and take part in prize draws for wonderful prizes provided by the workshop organisers.

The activities and workshops will be provided by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, the Jelgava Children and Youth Sports School, the municipal institution “Jelgava Municipal Police”, the Jelgava Children’s Library “Zinītis”, the “BUTS” training centre, the association “Volunteers for Jelgava”, the Jelgava Regional Tourism Information Centre, the Jelgava New Theatre and others.

From 5:00 p.m., visitors will be entertained on the stage at the Pasta Island open-air venue by a programme of musical performances featuring the pop group “Noslēpums”, the band “On My Way” and students of the Children’s and Youth Music Club. “Transleiteris” will perform at 7:00 p.m., followed by “Augša” at 8:00 p.m.  The event will conclude with dancing until 11:00 p.m. with DJ Raitis Boss.

Participation in the workshops and admission to the concerts are free of charge.
