Jelgava young people invited to explore their future professions
The City of Jelgava invites young people aged 16 to 25 to participate in the project “FREE, SMART, RESPONSIBLE”, through which, by taking part in various activities, they will be able to understand and choose the profession best suited to them. This is the second and final call for young people to participate in the project activities free of charge.
The direct target audience for the second stage of the project comprises forty-five young people from the City of Jelgava aged 16 to 25, including young people from groups at risk of social exclusion—young people from low-income and disadvantaged families, as well as young people with low incomes, representatives of inactive youth groups, and others. The project will use non-formal education activities, thereby developing the competences necessary for life and the labour market and promoting the social inclusion of young people at risk of social exclusion.
By carrying out the project activities, young people will gain a more precise understanding of their wishes and needs in individual career education and, together with the project’s career specialist, will develop and pilot the “Free, Smart, Responsible” practical activities programme (the FSR programme), using volunteering opportunities in Jelgava. During the training, participants will explore possible professions and volunteering placements, as well as prepare their individual career plan together with a career counsellor.
Before starting their volunteer work, each programme participant is planned to receive three hours of in-person training from a career counsellor in a group of fifteen people: self-exploration; exploration of the future profession and volunteering placement; preparation of an individual career plan; and observation of the specifics of the future profession and completion of volunteer work at the chosen placement, for a total of six hours carried out over a three-week period, scheduled and agreed upon with representatives of the institutions (the project organisers will take care of this).
The role of the institution or company involved in providing volunteer work during the project is to give the young person an opportunity to volunteer in an environment related to the chosen profession, including training, instruction, job shadowing and the performance of practical tasks.
In their applications, young people have shown particular interest in exploring six professional fields: medicine and pharmacy, trade and logistics, construction, information technology, catering, as well as education and psychology. In the first application round, 30 project participants were approved; they will begin carrying out the first project activities with a career counsellor on 7 and 8 April. This will be followed by exploring their future profession in a work environment—at Jelgava Polyclinic, SIA “Kreiss”, Jelgava Castle Pharmacy, SIA “Apotheka”, Bistro “Silva”, SIA “Namejs pluss”, and elsewhere.
To participate in the project activities, young people are invited to apply from 6 to 20 April by completing the application form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1KfG13JI8gkibh8FWnhhwRldIzRK_SRTNGRxk68r5Eag/viewform?edit_requested=true. Participants will be approved by 27 April 2021. If they have any questions, interested persons are asked to contact the project manager, J. Grīsle, by email jelena.grisle@dome.jelgava.lv or by calling 27842165.
The project “FREE, SMART, RESPONSIBLE” is being implemented within the framework of state budget funding from the Ministry of Education and Science’s State Youth Policy Programme for 2020. The total cost of the project is EUR 4,299.95, and it is being implemented from 7 December 2020 to 8 November 2021.
