The City of Jelgava Continues to Provide Food Packages to Schoolchildren
The Jelgava City Municipality continues, during this period of emergency, to provide food packages to schoolchildren who are studying remotely and have been granted free school meals.
Food packages have already been provided to students in grades 7–12 who are studying remotely and have been granted free school meals—including children from disadvantaged and low-income families, as well as children from large families. Starting next week, when students in grades 1–6 also begin their studies under a different model of educational organisation, all children who have been granted free school meals will also be provided with a food package.
As Tija Aleksandrova, Deputy Head of the Education Department, explains, the preparation and distribution of food packages to students is organised by each school's catering provider in cooperation with the school administration. "Therefore, the contents of the food packages may differ from school to school, while observing the common principle that the total value of the package distributed is the same for all educational institutions," emphasises T. Aleksandrova, adding that, as with the cost of a single school lunch portion, the cost of a food package includes not only the products it contains but also the costs of delivering, assembling and distributing the products. Together, these costs amount to EUR 1.42 per student per day. By 18 December, when the first academic semester ends, food packages are planned to be distributed to students twice.
The class teacher will inform parents and students how to receive the food package; the information will also be available in e-klase.
