This week, sand was delivered to the Jelgava municipal preschool "Kamolītis" so that the sandpits in the institution’s playgrounds could be replenished with the involvement of the children’s parents.  New covers have also been purchased for the sandpits to prevent the sand from being blown away by the wind and to keep animals from the surrounding homes from getting into them.

A. Bērziņa, head of the "Kamolītis" preschool, explains that the sand in the sandpits on the institution’s playgrounds is changed or replenished every year when the weather becomes warmer. "The exception was last year, when renovation work was carried out at the institution and the roof covering was replaced; therefore, starting on 1 June, our pupils attended other municipal preschools. The children returned to "Kamolītis" only at the beginning of December, and sandpits are not used in winter," the head of the institution says. New sand was delivered this week, and with the involvement of the children’s parents, by the beginning of May sand in all 11 sandpits will either be replenished or completely replaced. "Given the epidemiological situation, this year the traditional community work day at the preschool will not take place, to which we usually invited all the children’s parents. Instead, the teachers of each group are currently identifying parents who can individually, observing all safety measures, participate in replacing the sand," A. Bērziņa explains. Preparing for summer in good time, the institution has also purchased new covers so that the sandpits can be covered when the children are not playing in them.

The head of the institution adds that, having completed their work in December, the builders were unable to fully restore the preschool grounds, so this work is being organized now. "The builders will complete the work not done in winter—they will level the delivered topsoil, a lawn will be sown, and the builder has also undertaken to improve the roadway alongside the preschool, which was severely damaged by heavy machinery during the construction work; as a result, large puddles form when it rains," A. Bērziņa says.

The Jelgava Education Department notes that each municipal preschool organizes the replacement or replenishment of sand in the playgrounds as needed, assessing the actual condition. However, experience shows that this is done once a year in preparation for the summer season.
