A New Family Doctor Begins Pediatric Residency Practice in Kandava

As we previously reported, after an extensive search for a doctor, a residency student was finally approached. The student is currently qualifying in the family medicine specialty and has promised to continue working in Kandava by establishing an independent practice.

During their studies, residents rotate among doctors of various specialties in order to gain a broad understanding of illnesses and practical experience working with patients. Since the new family doctor will also have to take over some of pediatrician Ilze Spuriņa’s patients—that is, children and young people—resident Gatis Ķiršakmens will begin pediatric practice under Ilze Spuriņa’s supervision on Monday, 14 December. The practice is scheduled to continue until 26 March, in the hope that the COVID-19 virus will not disrupt the plans and that the doctor will not have to spend an extended period replacing colleagues who have fallen ill in other hospitals.

Gatis Ķiršakmens has worked in emergency medical services and currently works in the admissions department of Jelgava Hospital alongside his studies. G. Ķiršakmens plans to open a family medicine practice in Kandava in October 2021.
