LALIGABA Awards 2023
The Latvian Literature Annual Awards 2023 ceremony took place on April 28 at the renovated Riga Circus building, where the winners among the books published in 2022 were announced, the Lifetime Achievement Awards and Special Awards were celebrated. The laureates received LALIGABA lamps and cash prizes.
· The poetry collection 'Jaunība' by Ivars Šteinbergs, published by 'Neputns', was recognized as the Best Poetry Work.
· The novel 'Mežakaija' by Osvalds Zebris, published by 'Dienas grāmata', received the award for Best Prose Work.
· In the category of 'Best Translation into Latvian', Jana Vērdiņa's translation of the collection 'Melnās pārslas' from German, published by 'Neputns', received the award. The best prose translation was recognized as Dace Meiere's translation of Donalds Kajoks' novel 'Ezers un citas to pavadošās personas' from Lithuanian, published by the Latvian Writers' Union.
· The award for 'Best Original Literature for Children' was given to Kristīne Ulberga for her work 'Kas mammai somā?', published by 'Zvaigzne ABC'.
· Toms Deimonds Barvidis received the award for 'Brightest Debut' for his work 'Zaļā Dzīle', published by 'Dienas Grāmata'.
· This year, the award for 'Outstanding Work in Literary Studies' was presented for the first time, and it was received by Benedikts Kalnačs for his work 'Pavērsiens. Rūdolfs Blaumanis in Latvian and European Literature', published by the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia. The Special Award was given to Ieva Lešinska for her translations of Eduards Veidenbaums' works into English, published by 'Neputns'.
· The Lifetime Achievement Award for significant contribution to Latvian literature was given to translator Elga Saksis.
· The Reader's Award was given to Arnim Koroševskis for his extensive monograph 'Lielais noliedzējs', published by 'Dienas grāmata'.
