On Friday, 30 April, at 16:00, the Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC) Ventspils invites you to take part in the European Researchers’ Night events and listen online to the lecture “Latest Areas of Practical Research” by Vairis Caune, Dean of the Faculty of Technology at Ventspils University of Applied Sciences. Link to join the event: https://bit.ly/3tGKCv4.

By listening to the lecture, you will learn what artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, the Internet of Things and other topical terms actually mean. Vairis Caune is a unique personality—he spent his third year of bachelor’s studies on an Erasmus+ exchange in Nancy, France. He continued his research during his master’s and doctoral studies, cooperating with the Nancy “Hospital Research Centre”.

He spent three months in Switzerland modelling particle accelerator cooling systems and two months in Mexico developing control systems for bionic arms. He continues to work on modernising academic and professional programmes, as the field of IT is constantly evolving. He believes that effective modules for distance learning are a priority for future anti-pandemic solutions, as well as for people who wish to change their profession.

After the lecture, at 17:30 and 19:00, a  free practical creative technology workshop, “Building an Optical Telescope and Exploring the Stars”, will take place on the ZOOM platform for two groups. The workshop is intended for schoolchildren or schoolchildren accompanied by their families, and will be led by I. Blaudums, an educator at the Ventspils Digital Centre.

During the workshop, participants will learn about the latest developments in space exploration and the industry’s progress towards the colonisation of other planets. Participants will create their own space-exploration instruments to carry out space-exploration exercises on starry nights. They will have the opportunity to learn the basics of electronics by creating an electrical circuit symbolising twinkling stars above our heads. The materials obtained will also allow participants to carry out their own introductory electronics exercises in the future.  Participants will be provided with a prepared materials kit, which can be collected at the Main Library on Thursday, 29 April, from 15:00 to 18:00, and on Friday, 30 April, from 11:00 to 17:00. The number of participants is limited; register at https://forms.gle/5WvjfjNVf5sjfMaQ6

This year, the annual European Researchers’ Night event, whose aim is to introduce the public to scientific achievements and the work of scientists, will take place online. The theme of this year’s event is “Scientific Achievements for the Future”.

The event is organised by the Europe Direct Information Centre (EDIC), located at the Ventspils Main Library. EDIC offers residents comprehensive free information about the European Union, as well as various activities and events. The activities of EDIC Ventspils are funded by the European Commission.
