As Easter approaches, every Rigan and visitor to the city is invited to observe nature awakening and return to social life after the restrictions imposed by the pandemic by attending concerts, family events for children, traditional events featuring swings, folklore groups and dancers, as well as viewing outdoor installations and themed exhibitions and exploring interactive walking trails.
Several free concerts of sacred and folk music will be held in the capital over Easter. The festive events in a spiritual atmosphere will begin on 14 April at 4:00 p.m. with “One Heaven and One Bread”, a prayer for Ukraine in words and music, in Dome Square. This will be followed on 15 April at 6:00 p.m. at St Peter’s Church in Riga by “Good Friday Concert”, while at 7:00 p.m. “Good Friday Concert. The Passion According to St Mark” will be performed at St John’s Church in Riga. Meanwhile, on 16 April at 6:00 p.m., the “Ave Sol” Chamber Choir will perform the concert “On Holy Saturday” at Riga Cathedral.  At the same time, several folk-music concerts will be held during the holidays at the Riga Culture and Folk Art Centre “Mazā ģilde”, the Kokars Hall of the Mežaparks Grand Stage, and the “Ziemeļblāzma” Culture Palace. Some of the concerts will also be available online through the organisers’ communication channels.
During the Easter holidays—on 17 and 18 April—Rigans and visitors to the city will also be invited to swing in Dome Square, Arkādija Park, Mežaparks and the park of the “Ziemeļblāzma” Culture Palace. At the Mežaparks Grand Stage and in Arkādija Park, visitors will be able to explore the interactive walking trails “Easter Around the World” featuring 14 exciting activities: enjoying time together and swinging, colouring and rolling eggs, and learning about Easter traditions and activities in European countries, in which both adults and children can take part. Visitors are invited to bring their own decorated eggs, which can be displayed in the Easter egg exhibition as part of one of the games. As Riga is an environmentally conscious city, the design elements selected for the games have been made from decorations previously used in the urban environment, giving them a new lease of life with colour and imagination.
From 10 to 18 April, an interactive outdoor installation involving visitors, “Lieldieniņas braukšu brauca ar raibām oliņām”, can be viewed near the Riga Culture and Recreation Centre “Imanta”. From 15 to 18 April, every evening from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., the audiovisual project “Awakening”—bright video and sound projections that will inspire, empower and create a cheerful atmosphere—will be displayed on the façade of the VEF Culture Palace. Meanwhile, from 16 to 18 April, every evening from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., the light-installation object “Monade” will be visible at Māras Pond.
The capital will gradually be decorated with festive decorations, while various themed exhibitions will be on display in museums, cultural centres and their windows. The Riga Culture Centre “Iļģuciems” will also host the workshop “Honouring the Sun”, where those interested will be able to learn how to weave a sun-shaped design and make decorative elements, exploring the interaction between materials and forms and combinations of colours throughout the process. Meanwhile, the Riga Porcelain Museum will offer an opportunity to work creatively and make an original Easter decoration.
On the monitors of “Rīgas satiksme” public transport, viewers will be able to watch a video greeting for Rigans and visitors to the city from Riga’s art and music schools, specially dedicated to this year’s Easter.
The cultural activities are supported by the Riga City Council. They form part of the joint Easter programme for Rigans, created in cooperation with cultural centres. The festive programme is available at www.kultura.riga.lv.
