Liepāja residents invited to become volunteers and support young people

Liepāja residents are invited to join the #vieglipalīdzēt volunteer assistance movement and help young people with intellectual disabilities spend their time meaningfully through outdoor activities.

The Liepāja City Municipality and the Day Centre for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities, together with the #vieglipalīdzēt volunteer assistance movement, invite every city resident to become a volunteer and discover that helping is easy. Having assessed the situation in the city during the restrictions imposed in the country, it was concluded that young people with intellectual disabilities currently especially need friendly contact and outdoor activities.

B. Dreiže, a specialist at the Liepāja City Society Administration: “The volunteer movement has strong traditions in Liepāja. It involves not only young people, but also people of all ages—families, work teams and friends. These are people who have realised that by giving, we receive twice as much in return. It is a story about supporting fellow human beings by sharing our time, listening to them, and giving them kind words and the warmth of our hearts. The Day Centre’s clients are very open, but the pandemic has greatly restricted them. Together, we can help them!”

The activities to be carried out together, as well as new and current needs, will be entered into the “Zelos” application, where volunteers will be able to see them and choose the task, day and time they prefer. After completing an activity, the volunteer will mark the task as completed in the application.

To apply, Liepāja residents are invited to visit the “I want to become a volunteer” section of www.vieglipalidzet.lv. Once a volunteer has completed the form on the website, instructions on how to download and register in the “Zelos” application will be sent to their email address. Then, after joining the group “2021 Community Project: Liepāja Area” in the application, tasks or activities that can currently be carried out will be available in the “Tasks” or “Uzdevumi” section.
