Ligita Caune’s solo exhibition “Italy in My Heart” is on view at Bauska Castle
Ligita Caune’s solo exhibition “Italy in My Heart” will be on view at Bauska Castle Museum from 5 July to 31 August 2022.
The exhibition features fourteen paintings by the artist depicting scenes from Italy.
The artist is an enthusiastic traveller, and several of her exhibitions have been devoted to journeys through Italy, Austria, Israel,
Jordan, Morocco, England, Scotland and Dubai. This is the first time the artist’s works have been exhibited in Bauska.
The artist has captured moments from her travels in watercolour and felt-tip pen drawings and oil studies, which
were created between 2012 and 2021.
Speaking about Italy, the artist says: “Italy fascinates me and is my favourite land of all the countries where
I have been. Of course, every place has its own special and distinctive beauty. Italy attracts and captivates me with
its nature—with the rhythms of mountains and sea, lakes and small towns, with wonderful, warm-hearted people and music.
Venice holds a special place. Only by living and painting there, listening to the sounds of the city, sensing its scents
and getting to know its people do you begin to understand this mystical and slightly surreal city, which draws you in like a magnet.”
L. Caune was born on 30 May 1950 in Viesīte, a town in Sēlija, the youngest child in a family of four children of narrow-gauge railway engine driver Alfrēds and
housewife Marta Vecumnieka. While attending Viesīte Secondary School, she met the teacher and art historian Arkādijs Kasinskis; thanks to him, she decided to devote her future life
to the arts. She graduated from the Department of Interior Design at the Art Academy of Latvia (1975).
She has been a member of the Latvian Artists’ Union since 1987. The artist regularly participates in exhibitions and
plein-air painting events in Latvia and abroad. She has held more than 80 solo exhibitions both in Latvia and in other countries—
Italy, Austria, Russia, Lithuania, Denmark and Belarus. She has been actively involved in several associations—
the “Jūrmala Artists’ Association”, “Dante Alighieri” and “Sēlija Palette”. The artist is a true patriot of her region
and an honorary member of the Sēlija Association (2005). She organises Sēlija painting plein-air events and founded
the Arkādijs Kasinskis Prize for Viesīte school students for achievements in the visual arts (2008). Her
creative work encompasses oil and watercolour painting, book illustration, monumental art (wall
paintings and stained-glass designs), interior design, and the creation of urban environments and advertising.
The exhibition is free of charge and can be viewed during Bauska Castle Museum’s opening hours—from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.
