The LMA student fashion show will be livestreamed, presenting collections by 20 emerging fashion designers
The LMA student fashion show is an eagerly anticipated and widely discussed event in Latvia’s cultural life each year. In response to the situation prevailing throughout the world, it will be livestreamed for the first time on 26 August from the Art Academy of Latvia. This year, 20 emerging fashion designers will present their clothing collections to the public, demonstrating their interpretation of fashion as a multifaceted form of creative expression which, interacting with art and space, symbolically depicts a return to fundamental values—in other words, the treasures carefully nurtured by the Academy.
Historical evidence, memories of the past, the heritage of generations, childhood idols, feminism, ugly beauty, mutations, and the impact of COVID-19 are just some of the motifs that have inspired the clothing collections created by the students. This year, too, they will continue to surprise audiences with their creative execution and occasionally provocative solutions, playing with current everyday and avant-garde fashion trends and leaving no one indifferent. Thus, the catwalk will feature massive and abstract silhouettes, asymmetrical cuts, delicate details, flowing lines, and combinations of different shades, textures, and materials.
Taking part in the fashion show is a special event for every student, which is why dozens of emerging designers compete for this opportunity each year. However, after carefully evaluating the collections, a panel of Academy lecturers selected the 20 most promising emerging fashion designers, who will present their work to a wider audience at the end of the month. They are first-year bachelor’s students Loreta Asermane, Madara Indriksone, Laura Kreivina, Milēna Emīlija Seržante, and Alise Šutova; second-year students Odrija Buša, Anna Jurjāne, Sigrija Mintika, Laura Luīze Valtere, Laine Rozenšteina, and Milana Felīcija Semjonova; third-year students Elīna Siliņa and Adele Norvele; fourth-year students Sanita Kapeika, Vitālijs Kondraščuks, Ilze Muciņa, and Karlīne Anete Nagliņa; as well as first-year master’s students Anna Gulbe and Una Pūpola and second-year master’s student Agnese Eiduka-Zīle.
“Choosing among the work of all the talented students was an especially difficult task this year, and many timely and finely articulated ideas will unfortunately remain behind the camera. Creating their collections under remote study conditions, the emerging fashion designers invested an extraordinary amount of work and all their resources—psychological and mental as well as material—which demonstrates the need to present the results to a wide audience in the form of a livestreamed fashion show, a digital exhibition, and a digital booklet. All 20 collections are true works of art, testifying to the talent, determination, and professionalism of the emerging fashion designers,” comments Māra Binde, head of the LMA Department of Fashion Art.
The fashion show can be watched live on 26 August at 7:00 p.m. on the LMA digital platform virtuaal.lma.lv. It was created especially this summer for the first virtual exhibition of student diploma works, “Fresh Meat for Criticism 2020”, which astonishes with its exceptionally vibrant and diverse collection of artworks and is still available to view.
