Art Days 2021 in Daugavpils – Awaiting the Lifting of Restrictions
The annual Art Days are taking place in Daugavpils in April and May.
Unfortunately, this creative tradition, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, and therefore many exhibitions and events are being held
in a modified format – displays are being presented in shop windows, in separate street
stands or online. However, if the restrictions are lifted, museums and exhibition
halls will be happy to welcome visitors.
The Art Days began with a musical and artistic performance in the window of Unity House – at the intersection of Gymnasium and Saules Streets, people could hear lively music performed by the professional wind orchestra “Daugava” and talented accordionists, as well as watch artists N. Dzalbe and V. Semjonova create a spring-themed creative installation.
“Exhibitions Behind Glass” can also be viewed at the new building of the PIKC Daugavpils Secondary School of Design and Art “Saules skola” (“Secret Codes,” fashion design, textiles), at the Clay Art Centre at 8 18 November Street (the anniversary exhibition “10X4”), and in the stands and windows of Unity House. The works of lecturers and students of Daugavpils University, as well as exhibitions by the Russian and Polish cultural centres, can be viewed in digital format.
Various competitions are also being offered to lovers of creativity. For example, the photo campaign “Catch the Colour!”, in which anyone can try themselves in the role of a hunter of violet and pink colours. Photographs emphasising these colours can be sent to the Culture Administration’s email address kultura@daugavpils.lv. The most creative authors will receive surprise prizes!
The Daugavpils Museum of Regional History and Art, the Mark Rothko Art Centre and other exhibition venues have prepared new displays and hope to delight their visitors in the near future, if it is decided at the national level to ease the measures intended to combat the spread of Covid-19. The Museum of Regional History and Art plans to create an entire creative zone in its courtyard, where both children and adults will be able to expand their knowledge of art and create a painting together.
Officially, the Art Days in Daugavpils will continue until 14 May, so visiting many venues in person is still very possible.
