In the audience-favourite concert series “Symphony CLOSER”, Antonín Dvořák’s famous Ninth Symphony, conducted by maestro Gintaras Rinkevičius, will be available to enjoy on 12 March at 7 p.m. in a free livestream from Liepāja Concert Hall “Great Amber”. Meanwhile, on 25 March at 7 p.m., the concert-conversation series “CLOSER” will also resume, this time introducing the audience to the unique personality of harpist Dārta Tisenkopfa.
“Antonín Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony is a symbol of hope and enthusiasm, bringing to the realm of symphonic music the aura of New World Romanticism that we know from James Fenimore Cooper’s novels "The Last of the Mohicans" and "The Deerslayer", and from Gojko Mitić’s films about Winnetou. The folk melodies of the Appalachians and allusions to jazz woven masterfully into the symphonic fabric draw us into the excitement that permeated America’s magnificently wild dawn. This symphony seems made for the passionate maestro Rinkevičius and the emotionally powerful Liepāja Symphony Orchestra. An unforgettable experience awaits!” says Liepāja Symphony Orchestra director Uldis Lipskis, himself eagerly anticipating the next concert in the “Symphony CLOSER” series.
The concert series “Symphony CLOSER” was created to introduce listeners to the cornerstones of the world symphonic repertoire—beautiful classical symphonies that everyone should know. Before the symphony is performed, music commentator Orests Silabriedis and the concert’s conductor jointly reveal the context in which the symphony was created and details of the masterpiece’s structure. After the performance, specially invited regular listeners of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra—familiar faces at the orchestra’s concerts—share their impressions of their musical experience in a conversation led by Great Amber concert hall director Timurs Tomsons.
At the first encounter with a symphony, listeners enjoyed the popular masterpiece of the Classical period—Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40, performed by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Guntis Kuzma. The second occasion was when the orchestra, conducted by Normunds Šnē, led listeners into the wondrous musical world of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius by performing his Third Symphony, filled with extraordinary strength and energy. These concert recordings are now available at “Biļešu Paradīze” (the ticket price for one household is €3, ).
The final concert in this series can be experienced on 9 April, when listeners will have the opportunity to come closer to Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, performed in the interpretation of the erudite professor and conductor Andris Vecumnieks.
The concert series “Symphony CLOSER” was created with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the State Culture Capital Foundation. The approximately one-hour concert will be available to watch free of charge as an internet livestream both in the video gallery on the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra website www.liepajassimfoniskais.lv and on the orchestra’s Facebook page facebook.com/Liepaja.Symphony.Orchestra. After the free livestream, all concert recordings will be available for a fee at “Biļešu Paradīze”.
Even before “Symphony CLOSER”, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra created the concert-conversation series “CLOSER” so that listeners could get to know the unique personalities of their orchestra more closely. In the programmes, which last just under an hour, audiences can enjoy inspired solo performances by orchestra musicians in a wide variety of musical styles, as well as learn in conversation what, besides music, fascinates and inspires them. The 15 programmes in this now audience-acclaimed series are available free of charge on the orchestra’s website.
