Miniseries “Catherine the Great”
The miniseries “Catherine the Great,” starring Oscar winner Helen Mirren, will arrive on Shortcut for Latvian viewers simultaneously with its world premiere on 3 October
The four-part drama “Catherine the Great,” presented by HBO in cooperation with Sky, will arrive for Latvian viewers simultaneously with the miniseries’ world premiere. From 3 October, all episodes of the miniseries will be available to watch on the Shortcut app, which is also accessible to Helio iTV viewers. What is more, we may notice far more details in the series than viewers elsewhere in the world, as part of it was filmed right here in Latvia—in Rundāle Palace.
The four-part drama “Catherine the Great” tells the story of the politically dark and sexually charged court of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. Catherine the Great held supreme power throughout Russia for almost half of the 18th century, but the HBO/Sky miniseries focuses on the later part of her reign—when she embarked on a passionate affair with Grigory Potemkin (played by Jason Clarke). Amid scandals, intrigues, and enormous conflicts, they managed to forge a unique and loyal relationship, triumph over their opponents, and jointly carry out a series of liberalising reforms, thereby becoming the architects of modern Russia.
The leading roles are played by Academy Award winner Helen Mirren (“The Queen,” “Gosford Park,” “The Last Station”) and Jason Clarke (“First Man,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Mudbound”).
The miniseries “Catherine the Great” is directed by BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Philip Martin (“The Crown,” “Prime Suspect”), with a screenplay by Nigel Williams. Executive producers include Origin Pictures, with Helen Mirren, Philip Martin, Nigel Williams, and David Thompson, and New Pictures, with Charlie Pattinson and Christine Healy
