Minister of Justice Discusses Government Priorities in the Justice Sector and the Return of Abducted Ukrainian Children to Their Families with Foreign Ambassadors in Latvia
On Thursday, 8 February, Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere met with 30 foreign ambassadors residing in Latvia to provide information on current developments in the justice sector.
The annual discussion with the ambassadors addressed opportunities for democratic countries to agree on holding Russia accountable for war crimes, which would also help facilitate the faster return to Ukraine of children abducted by Russia. The Minister called on the ambassadors to raise the issue of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia with their respective governments and to seek support for political and legal solutions to help Ukraine reunite families.
At the same time, the Minister briefed the ambassadors on the latest information concerning the transfer of the former “Moscow House” into state ownership, after which it is to be sold at auction and the proceeds directed towards supporting Ukraine.
In connection with strengthening sanctions against aggressor states, the Minister also discussed with the ambassadors Latvia’s initiative to ban grain imports from Russia and Belarus.
During the discussion with the ambassadors, Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere also provided the latest information on initiatives aimed at reducing violence against women, as well as on progress in introducing the partnership institution. The Government’s priority of combating corruption and the shadow economy was emphasised.
The meeting took place at the Museum Repository in Riga, at 8 Pulka Street, where the ambassadors were introduced to the sound-recording exhibition “SAN” of the Museum of Literature and Music.
