Event “The Only Beauty I Know Is Health” Held for the Municipality’s Seniors
On Tuesday, 12 February, at the Pļaviņas Municipality Cultural Centre, the town’s pensioners’ association “Daugava Morning”, in cooperation with the Pļaviņas Municipality Library, invited the municipality’s seniors to the event “The Only Beauty I Know Is Health” (H. Heine).
The participants were introduced to the activities offered by the local government to help residents maintain their health (as part of the project “Activities Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle in Pļaviņas Municipality”) by Helmuts Banders, Head of the Territorial Development Department. Those present asked questions, the most important of which concerned sports activities in Gostiņi and the possibility of installing outdoor exercise equipment in Pļaviņas. Overall, residents are satisfied with the opportunity to take part in various free health-promoting activities in the town.
The meeting with Anda Leiškalne, editor of “Tautas Veselības Avīze” and a coaching trainer, took place in a special atmosphere. She was proud of her connection to Pļaviņas Municipality, as she comes from the Dzenītis family of Vietalva; the writer Emīlija Prūsa is also among her close relatives. Anda Leiškalne is grateful to the writer for her excellent command of language, which enables her to work as a newspaper editor at the publishing house Rīgas Viļņi. Anda offered a special self-discovery test, which each participant completed individually. It encouraged them to reflect on the priorities in our lives while maintaining and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Meanwhile, the book presentation prepared by the library, “The Library—an Aid in Maintaining Health”, will help people find and choose the book they need. The event participants were shown books from the library’s collection that present various ways of maintaining health by using the gifts of nature and the garden, as well as recommendations and advice from specialists known among the public.
The folklore group “Āre” provided a musical greeting and games for the event participants. Its leader, Agita Lindenberga, said: “Singing improves health better than books do!” The meeting concluded with melodious folk songs and good wishes, leaving every participant feeling positively energised.
