Regional rounds of the CSDD competition for young cyclists “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” have concluded

Last week, the first-round, or regional, stages of the CSDD’s annual competition for young cyclists, “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015,” concluded. They took place throughout Latvia from 10 April to 27 May. All the teams that won the regional competitions and will participate in the Latvian final are now known.

The second round, or Grand Latvian Final, will take place this weekend—5–6 June—at the Riga Technical University sports and recreation facility “Ronīši,” where teams will compete for the title of Latvia’s best young cyclists’ team and for a place in the European Young Road Users’ Competition in Vienna, Austria, on 3–6 September.

The most interesting facts about the first round of the “Young Road Users’ Forum 2015” competition, comprising more than 30 regional contests:

• approximately 2,000 pupils, or about 250 teams and individual participants aged 10–12, took part overall, representing more than 100 different schools in Latvia;

• the highest score was achieved by the “Baložu vidusskola 1” team from Baloži Secondary School (865 points); the next-highest score was achieved by the “Strauti-1” team from Strautiņi Primary School (788 points); the top three was completed by the “Jautrie Pūčulēni” team from Ērģeme Primary School (779 points);

• the largest number of teams took part in the competition in Ogre—24 teams from eight schools in the municipalities of Ikšķile, Ķegums, Lielvārde and Ogre;

• the smallest number of participants represented the city of Riga—one team;

• this year, ten schools that had not participated in the competition in recent years took part again: Beļava Krišjānis Valdemārs Primary School, Cibla Secondary School, Dekšāri Primary School, Lādezers Primary School, Vidriži Primary School, Rencēni Primary School, Mežgaļi Primary School, Užava Primary School, Ugāle Secondary School and Nīgrande Primary School.

The winners of the regional rounds that will participate in the Grand Latvian Final (if a winning team from a regional competition does not participate in, or is unable to attend, the Latvian final, the team with the next-highest score in the overall team standings that has not qualified for the Grand Final will be invited to participate):

• the “Ikseri” team from Smārde Primary School, 472 points (Tukums competition, 10 April);

• the “Velodrošie” team from Saldus Primary School, 558 points (Saldus competition, 13 April);

• the “MTB” team from Dobele Secondary School No. 1, 306 points (Dobele competition, 14 April);

• the “Fiksie” team from Aizupe Primary School, 313 points (Jelgava region competition, 15 April);

• the “Zebra 1” team from Jelgava Primary School No. 4, 503 points (Jelgava city competition, 15 April);

• the “X-Treem Team” from Talsi Primary School, 489 points (Talsi competition, 16 April);

• the “3x3” team from Kuldīga Alternative Primary School, 623 points (Kuldīga competition, 22 April);

• the “Red Bull” team from Brāļi Skrinda Atašiene Secondary School, 311 points (Jēkabpils competition, 23 April);

• the “Skrīči-1” team from Andrejs Upīts Skrīveri Secondary School, 609 points (Aizkraukle competition, 24 April);

• the “Ilūkstieši” team from Ilūkste Secondary School No. 1, 608 points (Daugavpils region competition, 25 April);

• the “Čillī” team from Krāslava Primary School, 534 points (Krāslava competition, 28 April);

• the “Vējiņš” team from Riebiņi Secondary School, 533 points (Preiļi competition, 29 April);

• the “KUSA-1” team from Kusa Primary School, 730 points (Madona competition, 30 April);

• the “Zelta zobrati” and “Rucava Rullē” teams from Rucava Primary School, 712 points (Liepāja region competition, 5 May);

• the “POPE–1” team from Pope Primary School, 762 points (Ventspils competition, 6 May);

• the “Jautrie Pūčulēni” team from Ērģeme Primary School, 779 points (Valka competition, 8 May);

• the “Mobīlie ceļotāji” team from Rugāji Municipality Secondary School, 544 points (Balvi competition, 11 May);

• the “Strauti-1” and “Strauti-2” teams from Strautiņi Primary School, 788 points (Alūksne competition, 12 May);

• the “Ašie braucēji” team from Ikšķile Secondary School, 703 points (Ogre competition, 13 May);

• the “Spicie 1” team from Baumaņi Kārlis Viļķene Primary School, 655 points (Limbaži competition, 21 May);

• the “B” team from Riga Centre Humanities Secondary School, 338 points (Riga city competition, 22 May);

• the “Bērzgale” team from the Bērzgale Primary School structural unit of Nautrēni Secondary School, 693 points (Rēzekne region competition, 25 May);

• the “Smile face” team from Rēzekne Secondary School No. 5, 525 points (Rēzekne city competition, 25 May);

• the “Spieķis 1” team from Gulbene Secondary School, 636 points (Gulbene competition, 27 May).

The CSDD has been organising the “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition for 22 years, with the aim of improving pupils’ knowledge and skills in road safety. All participants must demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge of the road traffic regulations, be able to provide first aid, understand the technical structure of a bicycle, and complete two practical bicycle-riding tasks.

The “Young Road Users’ Forum” competition is organised by the CSDD. In developing the competition content, the CSDD cooperates with the National Centre for Education, which has been the CSDD’s partner in educational projects for many years. The competition is organised by the association “For a Strong Latvia”; it is financed from compulsory motor third-party liability insurance funds and supported by the Latvian Automobile Association and the Emergency Medical Service.
