Branches of the State Employment Agency (SEA) throughout Latvia are accepting applications from employers until 23 April to implement the student employment programme in summer 2021. Vacancies can be submitted both in person at the SEA and remotely.

According to the SEA, employers are invited to apply to the branch whose service area includes the location where the jobs for students are planned to be created. Employers may submit the application, the list of jobs offered and a description of the job duties to an SEA branch in person, deliver them by post or send them electronically to the SEA branch’s email address, provided that the documents are signed with a secure electronic signature. The contact information for all SEA branches is available in the “Contacts” section of the SEA website.

The SEA reminds employers that students may not be employed in work involving increased risks to their safety, health, morals or development. Employers are required to ensure compliance with the epidemiological safety measures established in the country and the use of personal protective equipment at students’ workplaces in order to prevent the risk of the spread of Covid-19 infection.

When implementing the SEA’s student summer employment programme, an employer will receive a subsidy towards the student’s monthly wage in the amount of 50 per cent of the minimum monthly wage established in the country. If an employer employs a student with a disability, the SEA subsidy will equal the minimum monthly wage established in the country. The SEA will pay for a student’s health examination if this is required by legislation on mandatory health examinations, and will also insure the student against accidents at the workplace. The SEA will also pay a subsidy towards the remuneration of the student’s work supervisor.

In turn, the employer will have to provide co-financing for the wage, pay the taxes and compensate the student for unused leave. The student’s monthly remuneration for a full working time must be at least equal to the minimum wage established in the country—EUR 500 before taxes.

This summer, under the “Employment programme during the summer holidays for persons receiving education at general, special or vocational education institutions”, the SEA plans to employ 6,938 students aged 15 to 20 years (inclusive). The student summer employment programme is planned to run from 1 June to 31 August; however, changes may be made to the programme schedule if the epidemiological situation in the country is unfavourable.

More detailed information about the programme conditions and application document forms is available in the “I Offer a Job” section of the SEA website.

It should be noted that student employment programmes will also be organised by the Jelgava City Municipality this summer. Vacancies can be submitted to the Zemgale Region Human Resource and Competence Development Centre until 23 April.
