Orienteers from the Liepāja area will begin the season in April with training for new participants, as well as orienteering practice courses in Liepāja and its surroundings.

The first training session will take place on Thursday, 8 April, in the Dienvidrietumi neighbourhood, while on 13 April everyone will be able to test their skills individually in Beberliņi and, using a map and compass, set out to find the orienteering controls.

A total of six orienteering training sessions for new participants are planned this year. The first training session will take place on Thursday, 8 April, at 6 p.m. in the car park at the end of Vētru Street. Participation is free of charge. Prior registration is required to attend the training; please send an SMS to Jānis Bethers, head of the “DR-Krasts” Orienteering Club, at 29 199 411.

In accordance with the restrictions currently in force in the country, the session will take place outdoors in a group of up to 10 people. Each participant will be provided with an orienteering map and ample space to maintain a distance of at least two metres. The training may be attended only by people without symptoms of illness and who are not subject to self-isolation requirements.

The next training sessions will take place on 6 May near the LOC Tennis Hall, on 3 June in Beberliņi, on 1 July in Jūrmala Park, and on 5 August near the Northern Mole. The programme will conclude on 9 September with a training session at the end of Jūrmalas Street.

Practice Courses

In addition, to provide residents with an opportunity to spend their free time actively during the restrictions currently in force in the country, individual practice courses in the “DR-Krasts” orienteering series will henceforth be set up once a week in various locations in Lower Kurzeme.

The first practice course will be set up in Beberliņi on 13 April. Each interested person will be able to complete the orienteering route only individually or together with members of the same household. The course can be undertaken at any freely chosen time between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Participants will be able to choose from four courses, averaging 2 to 7 kilometres in length. They are suitable for various levels of preparation—for beginners, experienced orienteers, families with children, and school pupils. The average time spent on the course is from half an hour to two hours, depending on the course selected and the participant’s skills.

Participants will be provided with a compass and map, as well as control-punching tags. Participation is free of charge for children and school pupils; the fee for adults is 2 euros.

The most active training participants—those who have attended as many of the orienteering club “DR-Krasts” training sessions as possible—will be entered into a prize draw. The practice courses will be organised until the restrictions currently in force in the country once again allow competitions to be held.

All participants must comply with the distancing, face-covering, and other epidemiological regulations established in the country. Participation in the training is prohibited if there are symptoms of a cold, respiratory illness, or any other illness.

The current calendar of orienteering events can be followed on the DR-Krasts social media profile at facebook.com/drkrasts or on the website www.drkrasts.lv.

The orienteering events are held with the support of the City of Liepāja, the Latvian Orienteering Federation, SIA “Recte”, and the municipalities of Durbe, Grobiņa, Aizpute, Nīca, and Pāvilosta.
