Everyone has had to deal with scratches and the like. Each of them deserves sufficient attention, and at the very least should be covered with a plaster to protect it from germs. However, that is not all you can do, as there are also other medical supplies that can help. Where should you start?

A little blood is a good sign

Blood helps clean wounds, so a little bleeding is a good thing. Most small cuts and scratches stop bleeding fairly quickly, but you can help by applying firm, gentle pressure with gauze or a tissue. If blood soaks through, place another piece of gauze or tissue on top. Do not remove the old one; otherwise, you may reopen the wound and the bleeding will start again.

Gently clean cuts and scratches

Stay calm and clean the wound with cool water. Then remove any foreign objects with tweezers sterilised in alcohol. Gently wash the area around the wound with soap and a washcloth. Do not use irritating soap, iodine, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide—fresh, clean water is all you need.

Do you need antibiotic cream?

Antibiotic creams and ointments not only keep wounds moist, but also reduce the risk of infection. When using antibiotic cream, apply a thin layer to the wound. Some antibiotic ingredients may cause a rash in some people. If a rash develops, stop using it.

To bandage or not to bandage?

If clothing rubs against the affected area, cover it with a bandage. An unprotected scab or scratch may reopen or become infected. If in doubt, cover it with an adhesive bandage to keep out bacteria, and then change the bandage every day.

Quick care for minor burns

To treat a burn, immediately cool the affected area with a cold cloth or cool running water so that the skin does not retain heat and continue to burn. Then wash the burn with soap and water and dress it gently. Leave any blisters that have formed alone—they help protect the skin as it heals.

These are recommendations for minor skin injuries. Other medical supplies are also available and may be useful in other situations.
