Municipality explains the situation on a section of Brīvības Street in Gulbene

The Gulbene Municipality has received several calls from residents expressing dissatisfaction with the situation on the section of Brīvības Street in Gulbene that is being reconstructed.

A technological break in the construction works has currently been scheduled; however, the construction company is monitoring the condition of the gravel road surface. The section is graded nearly every other day, gravel and crushed-stone material are delivered, potholes are repaired, and depressions are levelled. To reduce the amount of water accumulating in this area, snow has already been removed at least three times. In addition, following a proposal, the maximum permitted speed has been restricted to 30 km/h (from the railway crossing at the Zvaigžņu–Brīvības Street intersection to the Brīvības–Baložu Street intersection). On 7 February, four pieces of machinery were also working on the aforementioned section of the street to improve the condition of the road.

It should be taken into account that Brīvības Street is a transit road, and traffic volumes are therefore high—approximately 4,000 vehicles per day—including both passenger cars and lorries. The situation is most critical on days when a thaw sets in.

Unfortunately, during the past construction season it was not possible to lay an asphalt surface along the entire section of Brīvības Street being reconstructed, as this is a complex site with numerous utility networks.

The Gulbene Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and asks residents and others who use this street for transit to be understanding. As soon as suitable weather conditions arrive, the construction works will resume and the section of the street will be completed in accordance with the project.
