To implement psycho-emotional support measures aimed at mitigating the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Centre for Education, in cooperation with municipalities throughout Latvia, has begun organising the planned summer camps for schoolchildren.
On 27 May 2021, the government considered the informative report prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science, “On psycho-emotional support measures in 2021 to mitigate the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic”, supporting the solutions proposed by the ministry to provide support for organising summer camps for children and young people.
Summer camps are planned as one of the opportunities to mitigate the consequences of the crisis, providing support both to children and young people in acquiring skills and competences and to their parents. Overall, it is planned to provide approximately 23,100 children and young people with the opportunity to participate in camps, primarily promoting the involvement of children and young people from social risk groups. The amount of support for organising camps in a municipality is allocated in accordance with the number of children and young people in the municipality.
At the camps, children’s and young people’s interpersonal, cooperation and communication skills will be improved, their psycho-emotional wellbeing will be enhanced, participants’ professional skills and talents will be developed, and they will also be provided with the opportunity to improve their subject-specific and transversal skills.
A compilation of information published by municipalities about the announced competitions is being created on the National Centre for Education’s website. We invite camp leaders and organisers to contribute to providing support to schoolchildren and apply to organise camps in municipalities.
Participants in the camps may be between 7 and 18 years of age, and financial support of up to EUR 95 per camp participant is provided. Day camps or overnight camps may be organised both indoors and outdoors. The camp must take place over a period of at least five days. It is also important that all supported camps be registered in the national camp database at www.nometnes.gov.lv, and that the Cabinet of Ministers’ regulations on the organisation and operation of children’s camps be observed.
