On Thursday, 22 April, at a meeting of the Finance and Administrative Affairs Committee, council members supported the allocation of €83,300 in co-financing for staging the Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship—namely, for the thematic decoration of Riga’s urban environment and informational support.

The initial budget request amounted to €109,600; however, following market research into the production and display in the urban environment of “Spiky,” the hedgehog mascot of the 2021 Ice Hockey World Championship, the most economically advantageous offer was selected, and the production and display of the mascot in the urban environment will cost less.

As part of the co-financing, thematic decoration of Riga’s urban environment and information provision during the championship will be ensured, including flags on flagpoles, vertical flags on lighting poles and overhead contact line supports, large-format informational posters, environmental design objects, and other types of thematic environmental decorations that will promote the championship and Riga.

At the beginning of this year, the Council of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) decided to approve Riga as the sole host of the 2021 Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship. All 64 games, including the medal games, will take place in Latvia from 21 May to 6 June.

The championship is one of the most significant international sporting events in the world, followed by approximately one billion people through the mass media and digital platforms.

The funds will be allocated from the Riga City Council’s contingency fund.
