Last week, Daugavpils City’s base budget for 2019 was adopted. It provides for €718 900 for improving parks and squares in the city’s residential districts. The most significant changes will take place in Aizpilsētas Park near Lake Gubiščes, while a new Zeļinska Square will be created near the residential buildings in the Ķīmiķu district.

The 2019 budget allocates €462 680 for improving Aizpilsētas Park, located next to Secondary Schools No. 13 and 15. Lighting will be installed in the park and the paths will be improved: the main routes will be asphalted, while some footpaths will be covered with gravel. New benches and litter bins will be installed in the walking area popular with district residents. Supporters of a healthy lifestyle will be able to use new bicycle racks, while, for the enjoyment of pupils at the nearby schools and residents of the surrounding houses, a slide that can be used both in winter and summer will be installed on the steep slope. Stairs and ramps will be built near the apartment buildings on 18 Novembra Street to facilitate movement with prams, bicycles and wheelchairs.

Meanwhile, in the Ķīmiķu district, Zeļinska Square will be created in the courtyard area between the residential buildings at 13 and 15 Zeļinska Street, 6 Arhitektu Street and 12 Inženieru Street. The city budget allocates €256 220 for constructing paths and lighting, building a car park and installing a children’s playground. The children’s playground complex will include several sandpits, merry-go-rounds, swings, a slide, a play complex with a rope course and a rope pyramid. An outdoor tennis table will be installed in the active recreation area, while a streetball court will be set up nearby. A separate landscaped and green area with benches will be provided for passive recreation. Other pleasant surprises await the square’s young and adult visitors as well.

Work on both sites will begin in the coming months, once the procurement procedure has been completed, and is planned to be finished during this construction season.

Alongside these projects, work continues on improving Jātnieku Square, which began last year. Before the seasonal break, paving work was completed and lighting was installed. As soon as weather conditions permit, the builders will repair subsided areas, install a passenger shelter at the public transport stop, put up benches and litter bins, and landscape and improve the area.
