130 Years Ago Leaving the Church. The Creation of Jaņis Rozentāls' Diploma Thesis
The Jaņis Rozentāls and Rūdolfs Blaumanis Museum (Riga, Alberta Street 12) invites to thematic tours and lectures dedicated to various aspects of Jaņis Rozentāls' life and work. From September 19 to October 24, on Thursday evenings, six tours and lectures will take place.
In the early 20th century, Apartment 9 of the building at 12 Alberta Street was the residence of the painter Jaņis Rozentāls and his wife, Finnish singer Elli Forssell-Rozentāle. Within the thematic tours and lectures, visitors will learn more about various aspects of J. Rozentāls' biography and work. The events will take place at the museum, but one tour will also lead through the city streets, telling about the painter's residence neighborhood and its changes over the centuries.
The first lecture, "130 Years Ago Leaving the Church. The Creation of Jaņis Rozentāls' Diploma Thesis," will take place on September 19 at 18:00, and will focus on Jaņis Rozentāls' study years at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and on the most famous of the artist's paintings - the diploma thesis "From the Church" (1894).
The church is a place where people from various social groups come together. The service unites the rich, the poor, the old, the young, farmers, craftsmen, students, and the needy - the diverse and vibrant Latvian society at the end of the 19th century. The flow of people leaving the church, in its diversity and truthfulness of the painting, also reflects the tendency towards an objective, unembellished reflection of reality characteristic of realism painting. However, the painting "From the Church" is something more - it signifies a new beginning in Latvian culture, the formation of the national professional art school. This year marks 130 years since the creation of this outstanding work of art.
