The Second Art Symposium Named After Jāzeps Pīgožnis to Take Place in Preiļi

The second art symposium named after Jāzeps Pīgožnis will take place in Preiļi from 12 to 16 September. It will be attended by the nominees for the Jāzeps Pīgožnis Award “For the Best Landscape Painting in Latvia 2016”—Silva Linarte, Vēsma Ušpele and Alise Mediņa—as well as the winner of the Riga Municipality Sympathy Award, Jānis Streičs, and the winner of the Preiļi Municipality Sympathy Award, Uldis Zuters.

At Jānis Streičs’s suggestion, an innovation has been introduced to this year’s symposium: each symposium participant will spend one day painting together with young talents from Preiļi Municipality—the students of the Art Department of the Preiļi Municipality Music and Art School. 

Artist Jānis Anmanis, head of the support foundation for young talents of the Jānis Anmanis Academy of Artistic Imagination for Latvian Children, will offer two master classes in painting and graphic art. The master class on 13 September will take place at Preiļi Secondary School No. 2, while on 14 September it will take place at Preiļi Primary School No. 1. Pelēči Primary School has also registered to participate in the master classes.

The closing of the symposium and the award ceremony for the second Jāzeps Pīgožnis Award “For the Best Landscape Painting in Latvia” will take place on 17 September at 14:00 at the Preiļi Culture Centre. The competition is being held for the second year and is organised by the Preiļi Municipal Council, Riga City Council, the Preiļi Museum of History and Applied Arts, and Riga St Peter’s Church, with the support of the Pīgožnis family.
