Pike Fry Released into Lake Pelēči in Preiļi Municipality

On 21 September, in the presence of Juris Kovaļevskis, a member of the Preiļi Municipality Council; Zigmārs Erts, Head of the Development Division; Sanita Meļko, Project Manager; Rihards Romanovskis, Chief of the Municipal Police; Solvita Kravale, a representative of the Food and Veterinary Service; and representatives of the State Environmental Service, more than 100 kg of pike fry were released into Lake Pelēči in Preiļi Municipality. The fish fry were supplied by the Rūja fish farm from Rūjiena Municipality. 

The fish were released into the lake as part of the project “Reproduction of Fish Resources in Lake Pelēči, Preiļi Municipality”, with financial support of EUR 2,032 from the Fish Fund. The aim of the project is to preserve fish diversity and promote fish reproduction by increasing pike resources in Lake Pelēči.

The main fish stocks in Lake Pelēči consist of bream, roach, tench and perch, with smaller quantities of rudd, white bream and crucian carp. Fish are caught using naturally reproducing stocks. Lake Pelēči is widely used by anglers, and fishing championships are held there in both the summer and winter seasons. To preserve the diversity and quantity of fish resources, it is necessary to replenish fish stocks. Therefore, based on the operating regulations for Lake Pelēči, a decision was made to gradually and regularly replenish the lake’s fish resources. This is already the fifth year that the Preiļi Municipality Council has implemented a project to reproduce fish fry in public water bodies. In previous years, with project funding, the lake was replenished not only with pike fry but also with zander fry.
