Preiļi History and Applied Arts Museum Receives a Valuable Donation
Every object has its own story of how it came into its owners’ possession and what happened next. Leontīne Pīgozne explained that Jāzeps was very fond of A. Paulāns’s works. He very often came to the firing of the kiln, or immediately afterwards, to purchase the products (whistles, candlesticks, and vases). The artist usually chose pieces with archaic forms, and when it came to whistles, he preferred them “the funnier, the better”. Some of the works were also displayed at the exhibition in Jasmuiža dedicated to Andrejs Paulāns. For his part, Polikarps Čerņavskis allowed Jāzeps, as a token of their friendship, to choose one of his works at each meeting. Thus, various-sized mugs and vases became part of Jāzeps Pīgoznis’s collection; his daughter Ieva also chose one of the vases.
The Preiļi History and Applied Arts Museum is grateful to Leontīne Pīgozne for these new additions to the museum’s collection, which will supplement the items belonging to Jāzeps Pīgoznis already held by the museum.
In September, when the exhibition “Jāzeps Pīgoznis Prize in Latvian Landscape Painting” is on view in Preiļi and the nominees for the main prize are announced, visitors will also be able to see the ceramic works that for many years stood in Jāzeps Pīgoznis’s studio as a small part of his native Latgale.
