The Creative Action Week radi!2017 events continue to engage, educate and inspire at the end of the year as well
October was especially creative and rich in a variety of engaging events this year, as the seventh Creative Action Week radi! took place throughout Latvia, growing in scale every year. Over the course of more than a month, 24 exciting, educational and inspiring events brought together interested participants. In addition, several radi!2017 events were held in Riga and elsewhere in the regions during November, the month of national celebrations, while the final closing event is expected to take place in December. This time, too, the aim of Creative Action Week was to highlight home-grown ideas, talents and achievements, as well as the potential of the creative and cultural industries and their interaction with other sectors. Moreover, this autumn, radi! events reached beyond Latvia’s borders for the first time, bringing together representatives of the creative industries and promoting international exchange of experience.
"radi!2017 highlighted several new and topical trends, which were emphasised this year with the support of our professional team and partners: building partnerships, transferring cross-sectoral competencies, applying design-thinking methods in everyday-life processes, developing the urban environment and architecture, creativity and idea generation, co-working, utilising the potential of degraded areas, promoting visual literacy, exploring cultural, decorative-art and culinary heritage, involving Latvia’s regions and their residents, minorities and young people, as well as the interaction of the latest technologies with the creative industries. To launch the radi!2017 week, representatives of various sectors were encouraged to ask themselves the question, ‘Is Latvia a user-friendly country?’, which prompted renewed reflection on what has already been achieved and what needs to be improved in the future in order to make the surrounding environment even more understandable and convenient for residents. The ideas generated are already being put into practice purposefully and will continue to be developed as we plan the radi!2018 events calendar, which will take place under the banner of the centenary," comments radi!2017 coordinator Līva Stūrmane.
As particular emphasis was placed this year on involving residents living in the regions, the most recent events brought together representatives of the cultural and creative industries, entrepreneurs, local-government and non-governmental-sector employees, as well as other interested participants, at the “Practical Design Thinking Seminar in Daugavpils” and the “Design Thinking Workshop at Lūznava Manor”. The aim of the seminar was to familiarise participants with design-thinking methods for identifying clients’ needs and ensuring effective communication, helping to implement ideas and projects successfully by attracting an audience to them. The
design-thinking workshop, meanwhile, focused on the potential of the Lūznava Manor complex. As part of it, participants learned a design-based approach and offered creative ideas for once again filling the manor’s derelict buildings with vibrant content and residents. Similar idea-generation activities were also carried out at the practical seminar held at the end of October by the Creativity Lab Academy for employees of public administration institutions. The seminar provided participants with basic knowledge of applying design thinking to the development of public services and processes, making them more comprehensible and accessible to users.
In November, the third discussion in the “Latvian Design 2020” series, entitled “Design in Education”, was also held. At the premises of the Art Academy of Latvia, it invited experienced industry experts and numerous interested participants to exchange views on incorporating design competencies into education in various fields, as well as on current market requirements and trends in societal development, once again demonstrating the essential role of design thinking and practice. The fourth and final discussion in the radi!2017 programme, “Design in Building the Country’s Reputation”, will take place on 19 December. It will examine the interaction between design and the country’s public image from various perspectives.
