To begin construction of the Rail Baltica railway station and associated infrastructure at Riga International Airport, the construction site near Riga Airport will be officially opened on 30 June. The contractor – the B.S.L. Infra joint venture, comprising the Austrian company Swietelsky AG and Latvian construction companies, the road construction firm Binders Ltd and LNK Industries AS – has assembled a team of construction specialists. A construction work plan has been prepared and will be available for everyone interested to follow at www.edzl.lv

Kaspars Vingris, Chairman of the Board of Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas:

“Despite working under pandemic conditions, we have managed to prepare the second- largest Rail Baltica construction project in Latvia for construction. The air and high-speed rail connection will provide new opportunities and conveniences for passenger and freight transport in the Baltic states. The implementation of the Rail Baltica high-speed railway in Latvia is proceeding by constructing the most complex facilities first, so that they do not delay the construction of the main line in the future.”

For the construction of the Rail Baltica station and infrastructure at Riga Airport, the main tasks have been assigned to the construction and quality supervision teams. The structure established will include administrative, technical, construction and BIM (building information modelling) departments. The construction team will comprise 65 leading specialists from the B.S.L. Infra joint venture; during the busiest construction period, more than 300 workers will be employed at the site simultaneously. The construction process will be managed by Bernhard Buchner, a representative of Swietelsky AG, a member of the joint venture.

The work is planned in stages so as not to disrupt airport operations or access to the airport. Starting on 15 June, interested parties will be able to follow the construction work plan at www.edzl.lv. Information about changes to traffic and pedestrian flow management plans will be available both at edzl.lv and on the Global Project website at info.railbaltica.org.

The project implementer for Rail Baltica in Latvia, Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas, together with state officials, representatives of the RB Rail joint venture, project implementers and representatives of construction companies, will officially open the construction of the Rail Baltica station at Riga Airport and associated infrastructure at a ceremony on 30 June.

Background information:

It has already been reported that in March this year, an agreement was signed for the construction of the Rail Baltica station and associated infrastructure at Riga Airport with the winner of the international tender – the B.S.L. Infra joint venture, comprising the Austrian company Swietelsky AG and Latvian construction companies, the road construction firm Binders Ltd and LNK Industries AS.

The Rail Baltica railway station, its adjacent viaducts and railway infrastructure at Riga International Airport will be the first high-speed rail and air transportation hub in the Baltic states.
The construction work is planned to be carried out sequentially in five stages, through December 2025. The first stage of the work – the construction of the Rail Baltica railway infrastructure from Imanta station to Riga International Airport, as well as construction of the station terminal – must be completed by March/April 2023.
Construction will be carried out on the basis of the design by the winner of the open international tender – the PROSIV consortium of companies from three countries (Sintagma (Italy), Prodex (Slovakia) and Vektors T (Latvia)).

Between 81% and 85% of the funding for this project is provided by the EU Connecting Europe Facility, while the remainder is covered by funds from the Latvian state budget. The recipient of EU support and the project implementer is the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of Latvia.
