Writer and Poet Inese Zandere Visits Līvāni
On 31 January, children’s chatter filled the Straume Hall of the Central Library of Līvāni Municipality – students from Līvāni Secondary School No. 1 met one of the most popular and beloved authors among children, Inese Zandere. The event took place as part of the series of meetings within the project “Me and You at the Library”, supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation.
Inese Zandere revealed that she had first tried to express her view of the world visually, but felt that a drawing did not fully reflect the feelings and thoughts that were important to her. Inese then began to express her reflections in lines of poetry on the reverse side of the drawing.
Writer and poet Inese Zandere engagingly explained and showed how the book “Latvian Animals” was created, and how many different professionals had worked to publish the book and bring it to its readers. Following what was happening on the screen, the children counted the people involved in publishing the book, offered their guesses as to what other professions would be needed to make the book not only informative but also attractively and interestingly designed, and bring it to readers.
The event continued with a poetry riddle and wordplay competition – under Inese Zandere’s guidance, everyone worked together to rearrange words or create words with similar sounds.
At our library, the poet read for the first time her new poems about children’s safety and injury prevention, commissioned from her by the Support Foundation of the Children’s Clinical University Hospital, as Latvia ranks among the European countries with the highest rates of childhood injuries.
At the end of the meeting, the children asked the author questions. They were interested in the age at which the writer had begun writing poems, what her first book was, how they could start writing books themselves, and other matters.
The next event in the project “Me and You at the Library” will take place in March with writer and local resident Ruta Skrebela.
