Larger Containers Installed in Riga’s Gardens and Parks for Waste Collection
At a time when
food-service establishments are offering food only for takeaway,
the amount of waste and takeaway food packaging has increased rapidly, and the small waste bins installed in parks to date are regularly overflowing. Birds, attempting to obtain food from them, often scatter the waste. Therefore, larger containers with plastic lids have been installed in Riga’s parks this week.
E. Cepurītis, Chair of the Riga City Council’s Housing and Environment Committee: “Overcoming Covid-19 has created many unforeseen challenges. One of them is the increase in the amount of waste. We invite park visitors to make safe use of this short-term solution so that the parks remain beautiful and pleasant. The municipality will continue working to further improve waste collection and to make it as easy as possible to enjoy Riga without generating waste.”
“Of course, we have also planned to equip the waste bins of the usual size with special lids that prevent crows from flying into the bins. While funding is being secured and procurements are being arranged, we are addressing the issue of park cleanliness in this way. During the coming week, waste containers will also be installed in other parks located near food-service establishments,” says J. Lediņš, head of the Gardens and Parks Department, adding that the containers are emptied at seven o’clock in the morning.
The caretakers of Riga’s gardens and parks urge people to put food packaging in the containers and then close the lids—this will help us keep Riga’s gardens and parks tidy, clean and pleasant.
